SEWAGE SLUDGE FOR FERTILE SOIL
The potential uses for sewage sludge have barely begun to be explored. This is something Wiederkehr Engineering wants to change, with clever systems that make something new out of materials thought to be unusable.
CHALLENGE: DRY SOIL
The layer of earth that is plantable – and therefore fertile – is getting thinner and thinner. As a result, levels of dryness are increasing. Not being able to cultivate soil constitutes an ever-increasing threat to farmers’ livelihoods.
PROBLEM SOLVING BY WIEDERKEHR ENGINEERING: SEWAGE SLUDGE UTILISATION
A newly developed process now allows unutilised residual waste from recycling plants to be dried and processed into fertiliser. Spreading this product allows soil to absorb and store significantly more moisture, making it more productive without damaging it.
